P0507 – Idle Control System RPM higher Than Expected
What does P0507 mean?
The idle control system is holding engine RPM higher than the computer commanded. The engine idles above target speed and the computer cannot bring it down — usually because unmetered air is entering the engine somewhere.
What causes P0507?
Listed from most to least common:
- 1Vacuum leak — the most common cause by a wide margin
- 2Throttle body needing relearn after cleaning
- 3Stuck or dirty idle air control valve
- 4Failing PCV valve or disconnected PCV hose
- 5Sticking throttle plate or cable
- 6Leaking intake manifold gasket
- 7Failing brake booster or its vacuum hose
Code breakdown
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Idle speed noticeably higher than normal
- Vehicle creeps forward strongly at stops
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible hissing sound from a vacuum leak
How to diagnose
- 1Smoke-test the intake system — this finds vacuum leaks faster than any other method.
- 2Inspect all vacuum hoses, the PCV hose, and the brake booster hose for cracks or disconnection.
- 3Check the intake manifold gasket for leaks.
- 4Verify the throttle plate closes fully and is not sticking on carbon.
- 5Perform an idle relearn if the throttle body was recently cleaned or the battery disconnected.
- 6Listen for a hissing sound with the engine idling.
High idle wastes fuel, can make the vehicle creep forward more strongly at stops, and puts extra wear on the brakes and transmission.
Common fixes and estimated costs
| Repair | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Replace cracked vacuum hose | $30–$150 |
| Clean throttle body and relearn | $80–$250 |
| Replace PCV valve | $40–$150 |
| Replace intake manifold gasket | $200–$600 |
| Replace brake booster | $300–$800 |
Costs are rough US estimates including parts and labor. Actual pricing varies significantly by vehicle, region, and shop rates.
Good to know
A high idle that appeared right after intake, throttle body, or gasket work almost always points to a hose left disconnected or a gasket not sealing. Retrace the recent repair before diagnosing further.
