P0446Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

What does P0446 mean?

The EVAP system's vent control circuit is malfunctioning. The vent valve allows fresh air into the charcoal canister during purging and seals the system during leak testing. When it does not open, close, or respond as commanded, P0446 sets.

What causes P0446?

Listed from most to least common:

  1. 1Failed vent valve/solenoid
  2. 2Blocked vent valve — debris, dirt, or spider webs are surprisingly common
  3. 3Damaged wiring or connector to the vent valve
  4. 4Clogged charcoal canister
  5. 5Corrosion at the valve, which is often mounted underneath the vehicle

TypeGeneric (standardized SAE / OBD-II code — same meaning across most manufacturers)
SubsystemAuxiliary emission controls

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Normal drivability
  • Difficulty filling the fuel tank — pump clicking off repeatedly in some cases
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose

  1. 1Locate the vent valve, usually near the charcoal canister under the vehicle at the rear.
  2. 2Inspect for debris, mud, or insect nests blocking the valve — this is a genuinely frequent cause.
  3. 3Check the connector and wiring for corrosion, which is common given the underbody location.
  4. 4Command the valve open and closed with a scan tool and listen for it clicking.
  5. 5Measure the solenoid's resistance against specification.

No drivability impact in most cases, but the vehicle will fail emissions testing and may occasionally be hard to fuel.

Common fixes and estimated costs

RepairEstimated cost
Clean valve / clear debris$0–$100
Repair wiring or connector$80–$300
Replace vent valve/solenoid$120–$400
Replace charcoal canister$250–$700

Costs are rough US estimates including parts and labor. Actual pricing varies significantly by vehicle, region, and shop rates.

Good to know

Because the vent valve is exposed underneath the vehicle, corrosion and debris cause many of these failures. Inspect and clean before ordering parts — sometimes clearing a blocked valve resolves it entirely.
